Women and Aikido Control and Confidence...
It is often assumed that because the average woman has less physical strength than a man, she will always have a harder time defending herself in a physical attack. In fact, in Aikido, because women are on average shorter and have a lower centre of gravity they often find that they are particularly suited to this hip-oriented graceful martial art.
Whilst learning how to protect yourself, you will improve your physical fitness and learn how to focus your mind which can be used to positive effect in your every day life, helping you to stay calm in times of stress and directly enhancing your self confidence and spiritual well being. You will also be able to carry into your place of work the philosophy of Aikido and use it to relate to others and build your confidence and ability to work with and relate to others.
Aikido is often called “The way of peace” which in short explains the non-competitive philosophy behind the principle of Aikido training, which is not to fight force with force but to redirect the energy of your attacker using throws and restraining techniques, controlling the attack, so using a measured view to the amount of force necessary to maintain your safety. Understanding this you will see that size, weight, age and physical strength play only a small role in becoming an Aikido practitioner.
But don’t be fooled into thinking that because Aikido is known as “The Way of Peace” that it is a soft Martial Art. As a measure of effectiveness, it should be pointed out that nearly all the submission techniques taught to police officers are either Aikido or very similar Jujitsu techniques.
